Welcome to the
C. M. Callahan Elementary School!

We'll Always Reach Higher!

Happy New Year to all Callahan families and welcome back to our winter wonderland.  We are now well into the second trimester of the school year with all grade levels expanding their background knowledge and making connections across all areas of the curriculum.

We take great pride in our writing program at the Callahan School so I thought it might be interesting to share our strategies with you.  Beginning in grade one our students are developing an understanding of the process and using inventive spelling to convey their thoughts on paper.  In grade two they are putting their sentences together into a cohesive and interesting paragraph.  In grade three our students are expanding their ideas into two and three paragraph descriptive, persuasive, and expository pieces of writing.  In grade four Mrs. Breen and Mrs. Rizzo again extend the process into four and five paragraph pieces that reflect interesting topics and development as well as utilizing the correct conventions of writing.  Mr. Downs and Ms. O’Brien then transfer the above mentioned skills into content driven writing assignments that pique their students’ interest and enhance critical thinking skills.  We are extremely proud of our students’ writing and that is why you so often see my name attached to your child’s writing endeavors, which are generously shared with me by all of our classroom teachers.

Stay warm and keep reading and writing!

Mr. Griffin
