About the Prescott Elementary School

Mission Statement

The Prescott School Community is dedicated to creating and nurturing a school environment that supports a community of learners and a love of life-long learning.

Providing instruction and programs that result in academic excellence for all children is a primary goal of the Prescott School.

The programs are designed to meet the individual needs of children and to enable them to develop to their full potential in an environment that is safe and secure.

Our curriculum will encourage students to act as responsible citizens, to respect the rights and beliefs of others, to understand and appreciate cultural diversity and to resolve conflicts peacefully.

High priorities of the Prescott School are to educate students to think critically and creatively, to read with understanding, to develop mathematical and problem solving skills, to communicate their thoughts clearly both orally and in writing and to apply computer technology to learning.

Teachers are on outside supervision duty in the morning starting at 7:35 a.m. It is strongly suggested that children not arrive at school before this time. All students meet on the blacktop outside the cafeteria each morning by 7:40am. The "Drop and Go" area outside the Gym can be utilized until 7:35am each morning. Any student arriving after 7:50 AM should enter through Door #1 to sign in to the main office.

If it is too cold, or raining, students gather in the cafeteria before the school day. Students may utilize the doors off the cafeteria or the "Drop and Go" doors by the gym.

Curricular Programs

In Norwood Public Schools, our elementary team utilizes Pearson EnVisions for our core Math program and Pearson MyView for our ELA program, Fundations for Grades 1-2 phonics, Mystery Science for 1-2 Science and STEMScopes for 3-5 science. Additionally, we use "We The People" as a supplement to our district developed Social Studies program in Grade 5. For all other subject areas we utilize a variety of programs to support the Massachusetts Frameworks.

Before School Care

Before school daycare is offered at the Prescott School. The children can arrive at school by 7:00am and are in the care of professional staff until 7:35AM when they are released for recess. Days of attendance are flexible according to the parents work schedule. The program is cancelled on days that there is no school, or a delayed opening.

You can visit the Norwood Extended Day webpage for more information.

School Closing or Delay

The Norwood Public Schools have two options for school closings in case of storm emergencies. Either the regular all day school closing or a delayed opening of school will be broadcast over the radio and TV.  This means that if the delayed opening option is in effect, elementary school children will report to school one hour or two hours later; that is, 8:50AM or 9:50AM . Bus students will be picked up by the buses at the regular stops one hour or two hours later. Schools will close at the regular dismissal time.

In the case of delayed opening, the a.m. kindergarten and pre-school classes will be cancelled. Before school day care at Prescott is also cancelled.

The main reason for calling off any session of school will be a regard for pupil safety. Radio/TV stations notified by the Norwood public Schools are:

WBZ - 1030AM
Channel 4

WRKO - 680AM
Channel 7

WCVB TV
Channel 5

Norwood Cable TV
Channel 64

When inclement weather occurs, there may be a delayed opening of school. Parents are advised to use their own discretion in keeping their child home from school or school events during inclement weather.

Please call 762-6804 if you are unsure if school is delayed or cancelled.
