bradley06.jpgThe first Balch School, a wooden frame building, was constructed on the front grounds in 1867 and named in memory of Reverend Thomas Balch. In this rambling wooden structure, the young people of South Norwood were educated until 1913, when the current Balch School was constructed on its present site. In 1923, the school was enlarged by an eight-room addition and by a large playground at its rear, known presently as the Charles W. Eliot Park. A second wing containing the Nicholas Abdallah Auditorium, kitchen facilities, gymnasium and conference areas were appended to the school in 1966.  In 2004 a new school library, centrally located in the building, was completed on the first floor.   The construction of the library was possible through fundraising by the Balch community.

The Norwood Art Department and the Norwood Police Department collaborate on an annual project with the grade three students. This project is an interdisciplinary connection with the third grade’s study of Massachusetts and the Town of Norwood. The students each design a poster which represents the theme, “How the Police Keep Us Safe”. This year we have chosen 12 pieces (Six first place and six runner-up posters) from each school to be displayed at the Morrill Memorial Library in Norwood. Every third grade student will have their posters on the individual schools web page.
