“IE/EI” RULE

            Write “ie” except in the following circumstances:

                   1.  after “C”

                   2.  long “A” sound

                   3.  18 exceptions on list

“SEED” SOUND RULE

            Only ONE word ends in “sede”

          Only THREE words end in “ceed”

          All the others are “cede”

PREFIX RULE

            To add a prefix, just ADD it.

          Do not add, drop or change any letters.

DOUBLING RULE

            When adding a suffix beginning with a vowel  (ed, ing, etc.)

          TO

          A word ending          consonant – vowel – consonant  (cancel)

          Double the final consonant

            IF

          The stress falls at the end of the base word.

          EXAMPLE:

          Cancel + ed = canceled

          Omit - + ed =       omitted
