Norwood High School

Friendship Club

The Friendship Club was created at Norwood High School, during theSpring of 1990. It is a club involving approximately 120 students each year.  A “social hour” is held every other Thursday, providing students who have varying degrees of special needs opportunities to socialize with their peers. At the “social hours”, refreshments are served and the students participate in various games such as Bingo, Jenga, Uno and various card games. There is always music and sometimes there are seasonal craft projects. The Friendship club sponsors the annual Faculty vs. Seniors volleyball and basketball games, which are attended by students with special needs and their friends from the regular education program.

At times, some students invite individual students with special needs to go to the movies or the mall or to do some other teenage activity. The entire club has attended sporting events, or other school activities.

The Friendship Club has been a very positive and popular activity at Norwood High School and many of its members have volunteered in other programs that serve people with special needs.
