Instrumental Music

Elementary Instrumental Music Program

The Norwood Fine Arts department is pleased to offer instrumental music lessons taught by highly qualified instrumental music teachers at all five elementary schools, beginning in third grade. For further information, please contact Catherine Connor-Moen, Director of Fine Arts.

Grade 3: Violin instruction only

Students will receive one half hour group violin lesson per week. Lessons are scheduled in cooperation with the student's classroom teacher. Occasionally students may miss some class time, but we strive to make the lessons as non-intrusive to the academic schedule as possible. Students are responsible for any classroom work missed due to music lessons. Upon completion of instrumental registration, notices will be sent home with the student's weekly scheduled lesson time. Students will be encouraged to participate in the spring concert as a member of the All-Town 3rd Grade String Ensemble.

The violins available to all beginning 3rd grade students are owned and maintained by the NPS Fine Arts department. A one-time maintenance fee of $50.00 will be charged for the use of a violin for the academic year. This fee also includes the purchase of a lesson book, music stand, and shoulder pad. At the end of the year the violin will be returned to your instrumental teacher.

Grades 4 & 5: String, Band Instrument Instruction

  • String Instruments: violin, viola, cello, and string bass
  • Band Instruments: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, snare drum, bells; oboe, with teacher recommendation.

Students will also attend one ensemble period each week.  4th Grade Band, 5th Grade Band, and the combined 4th and 5th Grade Orchestra all meet for 45 minutes.  Students will have the opportunity to perform in concerts and audition for honor groups as they develop their musical skills.

Norwood Music School-Owned Instrument Program

Due to the importance of balanced instrumentation in our performing ensembles, and the high cost of larger instruments, an inventory of specific instruments are provided through the Norwood Public School music program for students to use for an annual maintenance fee of $50.00. These instruments may be used by the student for as long as he or she is an active member of the instrumental program.  Instruments provided by the music program include Viola, Cello, String Bass, Oboe, French Horn, Trombone and Baritone and are available while supplies last. Students using school owned instruments maybe required to purchase a lesson book.
