Dear Parents,

The beginning of school is usually an important and exciting time in the lives of your first graders. For them, everything about first grade is new. If your child is like most children, he or she will come to school with a natural desire to learn, plenty of energy, and a bit of anxiety brought on by the change in his or her routine. These qualities help children make positive adjustments to school.

You've probably been preparing your child for school by answering questions and talking about school. I would like to share with you tried and true tips for making this school experience a successful one.

  • Talk positively about school.
  • Encourage your child to ask questions about school.
  • If your child expresses fear or anxiety about what school will be like, listen carefully and with patience. Often for children verbalizing fears will get rid of them.
  • Being well rested is very important. Attending school is physically exhausting for young children, especially the first few days.
  • Allow enough time to prevent putting your child through a hurried, morning rush. Getting to school on time is most important. Also, a reminder to your child if they are buying or bringing lunch to school is helpful.
  • Reserve a little time after school to talk about your child's day. Please look over any work or papers he or she has brought home from school. Discuss and go over any homework. Praise accomplishments and review work that is incorrect.

If you have any concerns at anytime which you feel needs more explanation, please feel free to call or email me at, jelbach@norwood.k12.ma.us. Communication and cooperation among parents and teachers is essential to promote a productive, learning environment.

Finally, I am delighted to have your child in my class this year. I look forward to working with you to make sure your child starts school, continues on a positive note, and has a wonderful year in first grade.

Thank you for all you do for your children and the Prescott School.
