Characterization and Character Development

- Sydney Carton in Book Two, Chapter 3, as a slovenly mess who is uninterested in his work

- First to see Lucie faint (67), and acts jealous around Charles Darnay

-Confesses his love to Lucie in Book Two, Chapter 13

Conflict (Internal and External)

-Internal conflict: Carton’s self-hatred. He wants to be loved but does not think he is worthy of it. Book Two, Chapter 13

  • Uses metaphors to draw a picture of his worthlessness before expressing his ultimate devotion and promise to Lucie.

-External conflict:  “’He is hanged there forty feet high-and is left hanging, poisoning the water’” (154).

  • Gaspard is hanged for killing the Marquis
  • His body is left hanging over the fountain as both a warning to and a punishment of the village peasants
Significant Quotations with Explanation

“’O Miss Manette…think now and then that there is a man who would give his life, to keep a life your love beside you!’” (138).

  • Carton showing his true love for Lucie.
