Library News for Fifth Grade Students and their families:
- Fifth Grade students at the Balch Elementary School research famous Americans for their Big Six biography research project. We discuss the research process and questions for research, and practice note taking before the book and online research begins. Book research is done at home and/or in the classroom. Online research is conducted during library classes in the computer lab and with classroom teachers as time allows. The classroom teacher then guides the students through the report writing process. See the file Internet Research Guidelines for help in using the Elementary Library webpage and online resources from home.
- In fifth grade, it is important for students to learn media literacy along with learning information literacy (research) and expanding their reading abilities and interests. Two resources provided by the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are designed to help kids navigate this area of learning:
- The first is NetCetera: Chatting with Kids About Being Online, for parents and teachers. They offer a free booklet that you can use to discuss issues of how to communicate online safely and how to deal with cyberbullying, etc. It is part of OnguardOnline.gov
- The second resource is Admongo, teaching students how to decode and understand advertisements and think about what is really being sold to them and by whom.
