Second Grade Page

Second Grade students at the Balch Elementary Schools have library classes two times per week.  One of these classes is their book checkout day and one is used for projects and informational learning. They are expected to choose one "just right" book that they can read independently, and their second book can be either harder- needing to be read to them- or easier for them.

On their project day, they will periodically go to the computer lab to practice keyboarding related to a animal book we are reading and they will research an animal and how it survives in their habitat starting in late Spring.  The classroom teacher guides the students through their research writing process. We then create an animal book or poster in library class.

See the Internet Research Guidelines for help in using the Elementary Library webpage and online resources from home.

At the end of the year, second grade students are also taught how to use the online Follett Destiny Catalog to search for books in the Balch Library using the library computer stations. See the worksheets that we use to practice these skill under Links and Files.
