December "CAL"endar

December "CAL"endar

Winter is finally upon us and the students at the Callahan have been enjoying the snow.  As we head into this cold New England weather we will use the winter recess guidelines set forth by the National Nurse's Association.  We will have outdoor recess if the "feels like" temperature is 25 degrees or higher.  Please have your child dress accordingly.  Students who wear boots and gloves will be allowed to play on the snow.  All other students will play on the blacktop areas of our playground.  We have a number of winter coats, scarves, and hats at the school.  Please let us know if your child needs an article of winter clothing.

There have been some incredible learning experiences at the Callahan during the past several months.  Our first grade students researched bats- did you know that a bat can eat over 600 mosquitos in less than an hour!  Second grade students have utilized strong critical thinking skills to solve a variety of math problems.  In grade three, students worked collaboratively to learn all about Pilgrim life from the perspective of a girl or a boy.  Students created posters and shared information with classmates.  Grade four students have been writing persuasive essays and have shared many wonderful ideas that we hope to implement here at the Callahan.  Our grade five students continue to work diligently in all areas of the curriculum with math challenges, writing essays, and science experiments.

Students will be performing for their peers next week in our holiday concert.  This performance will be videotaped and broadcasted over NPA during the vacation.  Due to fire codes we are unable to include family members at the live performance but we know you will enjoy watching this with your family over the vacation.

Next week will be a week of festive fun at the Callahan with a variety of themed days.
