Supporting Our Veterans

November 11, 2018

In honor of Veteran's Day, the Cleveland School Student Council organized a collection of toiletries and necessities for the V.A. Hospital in West Roxbury. Per usual, the generosity and kindness of our Cleveland community is remarkable. The boxes in our lobby were overflowing with donations!!

Norwood is proud to announce that we have officially launched the INTERFACE Mental Health Referral Helpline. This is a free, confidential mental health outpatient referral service for children, adults, and families. The Cleveland celebrated its 60th Birthday this year! The school was rocking the '50s era with music, dance and historical research. As the culmination, each grade level presented their learning at a school wide assembly. The First Grade twisted and the Third Grade hand jived. Students in the Second Grade performed "Splish Splash" and "Rockin' Robin". The Fourth Grade treated the audience with the early history of of space exploration --rap-style! Sport lovers learned all sorts of interesting facts about Boston's teams in 1958.

Force Field for Good

Troubadour Barry Lane brought his singing assembly program to the Cleveland on Monday. Students learned about strategies to promote empathy and self-regulation through stories, songs and music.

Open House!

October 17, 2018

Parents and students enjoyed visiting classrooms and meeting the teachers at the Cleveland Open House last week. Families also had the opportunity to support the PTA's Book Fair, pumpkins and mums fundraiser.

It's The Fall Book Fair!

October 7, 2018

The Fall Book Fair opens Tuesday, October 9th. The Fair will be open until 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, October 11th, the Fair is open until 3:30 and then re-opens for Open House 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.

Cleveland families attending our October 11th Open House (5:30-7:00 p.m.) will have the opportunity to check out the pumpkins, mums and refreshments for sale! All proceeds go to Fifth Grade end-of-year special events.

Welcome Back!

September 4, 2018

Thursday, September 6th is the First Day of School! Student arrival time is between 8:25 a.m. - 8:40 a.m. We are excited to begin a new year!

The Cleveland School is hosting an Orientation on Tuesday, September 4th from 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. for families of students entering First Grade or who are new to the school.

Bridget Kidd earned Honorable Mention for her submission to the Morrill Memorial Library's Seventh Annual Essay Contest. This year's topic asked Grades 3-8 participants to consider: "If I Could Dive Into the World of Any Book" which title would it be. Bridget wrote about the world of Harry Potter. The Library held an Award Ceremony Monday night.

The Clifford Library had a very special guest reader come in to do a wonderful bilingual lesson with some second grade classes. Maureen Crook Vinson visited our library in honor of her sister, former teacher and librarian Paula Clifford. The students enjoyed hearing Senora Vinson's story, Manana Iguana, as well as singing songs that taught the color and number words in Spanish. We all enjoyed our visit with Senora Vinson!

A Storyteller Visit!

Storyteller Diane Edgecomb entertained students with a variety of stories focusing on Nature. Her presentation, "Tale for the Earth" addressed such issues as recycling and conservation. Thank you to our PTA for bringing this show to the the Cleveland! This program was also supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council.

The Orient Lodge in Norwood selected second-grade teacher, Joy Hughey, as Teacher of the Year! The Lodge honored 30 teachers on May 4th for their dedication and commitment at its annual Teacher of the Year Banquet. We congratulate Mrs. Hughey for her award as well extending congratulations to our fifth-grade teacher, Cait Joyce, who was also nominated for Teacher of the Year!

The Cleveland School appreciates all of the support provided by students, PTA members, families and friends for our first Fun Run. We surpassed our $15,000 goal and received over $27,000. Mrs. Coppola celebrated the achievement by dressing up as Spiderman and standing on her head!. The money raised will be used to improve our school.

The CLEVELAND FUN RUN BASH is underway! It is a two-week program that kicked off with a Pep Rally and ends with the big Fun Run event. This year, we’re raising funds for playground swings, water bottle filling stations and solar film to help air condition our classrooms. Please support the Cleveland School by asking friends and family to pledge your child for the Fun Run. (Remember, students will run 30-35 laps.) The in-school Fun Run will take place on Friday, April 6th.

Wacky Socks Day!

As part of our month-long celebration of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America, staff and students came to school this week wearing wacky socks!

For the next month, all classroom teachers will be reading aloud "How To Steal A Dog" by Barbara O'Connor. The read-aloud is part of the district's annual Share-A-Book program. Our PTA joined the other schools in providing funding for the titles.

Pink Shirt Day

Staff and students came to school wearing pink on February 28th to protest bullying and promote kindness. Pink T-Shirt Day is an annual event designed to raise awareness about bullying.

Spirituals and Variations

February 16, 2018

The PTA recently sponsored the George W. Russell Jr. and Co.'s "Clap Your Hands" enrichment program. Students learned about the history of gospel music and its importance to the African-American community through an entertaining array of songs that had everyone clapping and moving. This program was also supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council.

100th Day of School!

February 15, 2018

Students celebrated the 100th day of School by bringing in 100 items, locating 100 items or doing all things 100-related. If you were in Fourth Grade, you dressed up as a 100-year old person!
