Parents as Partners
What parents can do to encourage reading-like behavior:
- Provide picture books with limited text that children can "read" to themselves, as well as more difficult texts.
- Re-read favorite stories and rhymes.
- Visit the library
- Model reading behaviours for your child.
- Establish a language rich environment in the home.
- Read texts featuring rhyme, rhythm, and repetition.
- Talk about different genre, and gather collections at home.
- Demonstrate use of context cues to construct meaning using pictures.
- Always foster children's enjoyment of reading.
- Read to your child every day and share your enjoyment of reading.
- Use web sites to gather information with your child.
Remember: I am only a phone call away as we work together to assist your child with becoming a life long learner!
