Parents as Partners

What parents can do to encourage reading-like behavior:

  • Provide picture books with limited text that children can "read" to themselves, as well as more difficult texts.
  • Re-read favorite stories and rhymes.
  • Visit the library
  • Model reading behaviours for your child.
  • Establish a language rich environment in the home.
  • Read texts featuring rhyme, rhythm, and repetition.
  • Talk about different genre, and gather collections at home.
  • Demonstrate use of context cues to construct meaning using pictures.
  • Always foster children's enjoyment of reading.
  • Read to your child every day and share your enjoyment of reading.
  • Use web sites to gather information with your child.

Remember: I am only a phone call away as we work together to assist your child with becoming a life long learner!
