Friday, June 8

Today in class students played Quizlet Live to prepare for the test on Monday. The Chapter 3 Living Resources Review and Assess from pages 111-112 is the homework due on Monday. For students missing class today the link to the Quizlet questions can be done individually.

Thursday, June 7

Today was the Midsummer Night assembly, interrupting some classes. Classes that met worked on Day 2 of the Invasive Species Investigation, creating Wanted Posters in groups of up to four students.

Since many students are attending the Great East Festival, I made the Chater 3 Living Resources Review and Assess homework available today, but due on Monday, which is the test day.

Wednesday, June 6

Today in class students partner read pages 106-109, The Story of Taxol. Students completed Guided Reading on this, and also Connecting Concepts and Key Terms worksheets. All work is due tomorrow. The Living Resources Test Study Guide was also passed out.

Tuesday, June 5

Today in class students reviewed their work on Biodiversity from yesterday, and began the Invasive Species Investigation. Video clip on Invasive Species was shown in class. The sheet for the work, as well as the link to reserve your invasive specie through Signup Genius can be found in Google Classroom.

Monday, June 4

Today in class we reviewed material from before the DC trip, and students read pages 95-105 on Biodiversity (Chapter 3, Section 3). Homework is to complete the packet begun in class, Guided Reading and Review/Reinforce worksheets are part of this packet.

Friday, May 25

No homework today. All work assigned yesterday (see below) is due on June 3 after DC trip, if you were absent or did not complete it.

Thursday, May 24

In class today, students read pages 82-87, Environmental Issues, and completed Guided Reading and Reinforcement for Environmental Issues

Next, students read pages 89-93, Forests & Fisheries, and completed the Guided Reading and Reinforcment for Forests & Fisheries.

Note that this is in two stapled packets in class, and there are FOUR links to the documents here. All work is due tomorrow, Friday.

Wednesday, May 23

Today was the Final Exam. Well, not so final since we're doing one more chapter! Homework is vocabulary from all of Chapter 3, Livinng Resources

Monday, May 21 and Tuesday, May 22

Review days for the final exam, which is scheduled for Wednesday, May 23. The Final Exam Study Guide was passed out (four sides).

Monday, May 14

Today in class we reviewed Aquatic Ecosystems, and students began reviewing for the test, but completing a Summary Outline of Chapter 2, as well as Connecting Concepts and Key Terms review sheets. All work is due tomorrow, which is the Chapter 2 test day.  Work will be reviewed before beginning the test.

Friday, May 11

Today in class we reviewed the Aquatic Ecosystems guided reading, and spent most of the period playing Jognog building towers to win the weekly Tower Challenge AND reviewing for MCAS at the same time. Students completing additional towers beyond those assigned should keep a record of these or send me a message within Jognog. The Ecosystems and Biomes Test is next Tuesday, May 15. The test study guide was passed out today, so you can start reviewing.

Homework is the reinforcement worksheet on Aquatic Ecosystems.

Thursday, May 10

Today in class we reviewed the Venn Diagrams and took the quiz on Land Biomes. Next, students begain to read page 70-73 on Aquatic Ecosystems. Homework is Aquatic Ecosystems Guided Reading AND vocab.

Students are reminded tomorrow is Science MCAS review. Bring your headphones if you want to watch BrainPop videos or use the audio feature of JogNog.

Wednesday, May 9

Today in class students completed a Land Biomes Reinforcement worksheet, which was reviewed in class. Homework (started in class) was to complete six Venn Diagrams, finding two similarities and two differences for each of the land biomes as shown on the sheet. The quiz is tomorrow, on all information from pages 58-67, Section 4 of Chapter 2, Land Biomes. Use your book and your chart completed in class to study.

Monday-Tuesday May 7-8

On MCAS Math days, students had science class just once. All classes completed a jigsaw with expert groups on land biomes. Homework is to complete the Land Biomes Chart, if not completed in class.

Friday, May 4

Today in class students used Chromebooks for Science MCAS review. Students logged onto their Jognog.com account. Your username is the same as login for school, (example 22jsmith) and your password should be your regular school password that you set. Use the drop down menu to find your class name. Students take the 2016 and 2017 MCAS practice tests assigned, and note which topics they need to review. Students may use brainpop.com/science to find Brainpop videos on specific topics to review. Brainpop signin is coakley and password is coakley. It is one account for everyone in the school.

Use the MCAS Review with JogNog and BrainPop sheet to detail your review efforts. This sheet will be passed in for classwork credit.

 

Thursday, May 3

Today in class, we reviewed the work on Biogeography, and students did a Land Biomes Preview on Section 4 of Chapter 2, Land Biomes. Students are to skim read pages 58-67 and complete the two sided sheet. This is due on Monday.

Wednesday, May 2

Today in class students completed their test analysis on Chapter 1 test, and we reviewed all of Cycles of Matter work. Students then started working on the homework which is: Read pages 54-57 on Biogeography, complete Guided Reading, Review & Reinforce, and Section 3 Assessment questions.

Tuesday, May 1

Today in class, students reviewed the homework and took the quiz. Homework is Cycles of Matter chart. Please complete in PENCIL!

Monday, April 30

Today in class students were able to review their classwork from Friday on Cycles of Matter. We reviewed the Grasshopper MCAS question, watched a video clip on Hydrothermal Vent Communities, and completed Food Webs at Hydorthermal Vents worksheet, which was also reviewed in class. Homework is the "Big Food Web" MCAS practice, with five questions on the back. The quiz on Energy Flow Through Ecosystems is tomorrow. Review all food chain, food web, and energy pyramid work on pages 42-47 of Chapter 2/.

Friday, April 27 

I am absent on Friday. The following classwork should be completed by Monday. Please finish whatever is not done in class for homework over the weekend.

Read pages 48-53, Cycles of Matter, Chapter 2 Section 2. Complete the Guided Reading, annotate and highlight the Section Summary, complete the Review and Reinforce worksheet, and on the back, answer the Section 2 Assessment questions on page 53 (NEED YOUR BOOK) in complete sentences.

Food Web quiz is rescheduled for Tuesday, May 1. New material on Cycles of Matter will not be on the quiz.

Tuesday, April 24

Today in class we reviewed the homework, and students presented their Endangered Species projects. Homework, which is due on FRIDAY, is another Food Web Open Response MCAS question.

Monday, April 23

Today in class students explored How To Read a Food Web, read pages 42-47 of Chapter 2-1, completing Guided Reading for Energy Flow Through Ecosystems, and completed a Practice MCAS Open Response. All due on Tuesday.

Friday, April 13

Today was the Chapter 1 Test on Populations and Communities. The Endangered Species Project is due to be TURNED IN TO GOOGLE CLASSROOM by Monday, April 23. If you have any questions about your project over break, send me an email and I will get back to you. I may only check email every few days, so don't wait until the last minute.

Tips and reminders for project:

  • For higher grade, exceed the "minimum" amount of information or pictures.
  • Make sure you are including reference citation for all photos, which is the DESTINATION WEBSITE, not "google.com." Google is a search engine, not a destination. Make sure the photos you are using are not copyright protected!
  • Be sure to explain the meaning of unfamiliar terms. Be able to answer questions on any part of the project.
  • Copying and pasting is plagiarism! Use your own words.
  • Presentations will be Tuesday-Thursday in class. Presentations should not be longer than 3-5 minutes total. Make sure you can pronounce any word in your presentation!

Thursday, April 12

Today in class, students participated in a Clicker review. The warmup was the Connecting Concepts Map. Homework is to study for the Chapter 1 test, which is tomorrow. Extra credit homework (highly suggested) is to write out both BOLDED SENTENCES for all four sections of Chapter 1, and CAPTIONS OF ILLUSTRATIONS for Figures 1-18.

Wednesday, April 11

Today in class, students viewed a video clip on Succession at Mt. St. Helens, and a fun music video on Adaptations. Students worked in pairs on Changes in Communities reinforcement worksheet, and From Pond to Forest on the back. The Chapter 1 Test Study Guide was passed out. 

The homework is Review and Assess at the end of Chapter 1. This is due tomorrow, so we can review problem questions before the test on Friday. Clicker review in class tomorrow.

Tuesday, April 10

Today in class, we reviewed the homework together, and watched a 3 minute video on Wolves in Yellowstone. Next stduents completed a sheet on Interactions Among Living Things Review, and started reading pages 32-35, Section 4; Changes in Communities.

Homework is to complete a Guided Reading on Changes in Communities, and write out vocabulary for the 4 new terms.

Monday, April 9

Today in class we reviewed the homework, watched a video clip on Symbiosis, took notes on Symbiotic Relationships Graphic Organizer, and then students worked in groups to distinguish Symbiotic Relationships.

Homework is to complete the Interactions Among Living Things Reinforcement Worksheet.

Friday, April 6

Today in class after reviewing the homework, students took a vocabulary quiz on Sections 1 and 2 of Chapter1, then began reading pages 24-31 of Section 3, Interactions Among Living Things. Homework is to complete a Guided Reading (short) and a graphic organizer on Defense Strategies (back side of sheet) and write out vocabulary for the 13 key terms from Section 3.

Thursday, April 5

Today in our short, half day classes, students completed a warmup on Determining Population Size, and reviewed the homework from last night. A quiz study guide was distributed for tomrrow's vocabulary quiz on Sections 1 and 2 of Chapter 1.

Homework is the Reinforcement Worksheet on Studying Populations, and to study for the quiz tomorrow. 

Wednesday, April 4

Today in class, students completed Living Things in the Environment reinforcement worksheet, and this was reviewed in class (absent students should make this up!). Homework is vocab key terms (8 of them) and guided reading for Studying Populations, Chapter 1 Section 2 on pages 13-20.

Tuesday, April 3

Today students had their second and final research day for the Endangered Species project.

Homework is to have the vocab key terms and guided reading for Living Things in the Environment, Chapter 1 Section 1.

Monday, April 2

Today in class, students watched the 9 minute video The Sixth Extinction, and we discussed the Endangered Species Project. Students had time to research on Chromebooks, choose and "reserve" their specie today. The Research Worksheet was passed out, as well as the Project Rubric. Links to research websites apporved for this project are listed here. All this information is also on my Google Classroom. Students have use of Chromebooks today and tomorrow in class, and the rest of the project should be completed out of the classroom.

Homework assigned today and due on Wednesday is Guided Reading packet for Living Things and the Environment, Chapter 1, Section 1. Read pages 6-11 of Chapter 1.

Thursday, March 29

Today was the Photosynthesis & Respiration test. Books were exchanged, new book is Book E, Environmental Science. Information for Endangered Species project was passed out. Research days for project will be Monday and Tuesday, April 2 and 3. Project will  be due on Monday, April 23. Sheets for Endangered Species project can be found in my Google Classroom.

Homework assigned today and due NEXT WEDNESDAY is defining the 8 vocabulary key terms on pages 6-11 of the new book, Chapter 1, Populations and Communities, Section 1, Living Things and the Environment.
