Cleveland Elementary School News
The PTA recently sponsored the George W. Russell Jr. and Co.'s "Clap Your Hands" enrichment program. Students learned about the history of gospel music and its importance to the African-American community through an entertaining array of songs that had everyone clapping and moving. This program was also supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council.
Students celebrated the 100th day of School by bringing in 100 items, locating 100 items or doing all things 100-related. If you were in Fourth Grade, you dressed up as a 100-year old person!
The New England Percussion Ensemble immersed students in an entertaining musical presentation about percussion instruments, history, language and the joy of music. The program was sponsored by the Cleveland PTA's enrichment series. This program was also supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council.
The Fourth Grade tested students' knowledge about continents, countries, and all things geographic in its annual Geography Bee. Poona L placed first and Brooke T earned second place.
Norwood High School's Celtic Strings and the Madrigals performed for the school on Thursday. The Madrigals sang songs of the season as well as holiday favorites. The Celtic Strings ensemble treated the audience to an instrumental concert of traditional songs.
Brian Curry introduced his Magical Math Tour to students in two assemblies this week. The PTA-sponsored program explored the importance of math through magic and humor. This program was also supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council.
The Cleveland kicked off its first grade-level Buddy Breakfast this week! First-Grade students invited family members to come and meet their friends' families. Parents, grandparents, and siblings attended and enjoyed food, music and conversation. Check out the Buddy Breakfast video under School Events.

Performer Scott Jameson brought his "Contact: The Magic of Communication" program to the Cleveland in two assemblies on Friday. Jameson used magic, juggling, mime and music to explain the different ways people communicate and interact and how it has evolved over time. The PTA sponsored the enrichment program. This program was also supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council.
Superintendent Dr. David L. Thomson met with parents and staff for coffee and conversation in the Cleveland Library Wednesday night. The event was the first of three scheduled meetings planned by the Superintendent to meet with members of the community and learn about the town and the schools. The next "Coffee" is being held at the Savage Center on October 19th at 8:30 a.m.
The Cleveland hosted the School Committee's October 11th meeting in the school cafeteria. The Committee plans to rotate its meeting place between all the schools this year. At Wednesday night's meeting, Mrs. Coppola presented an update on the school's accomplishments and activities.
The Cleveland School adopted classrooms in Houston, Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Students brought in much needed school supplies.
The Cleveland PTA proudly presents "The Ooch Experience" on Friday, September 15th. All Cleveland families are welcome to a fun night of yo-yos, music and dance! Doors open at 5:45 pm. The hour-long show begins at 6 pm. Snacks, beverages and Cleveland merchandise will be available for purchase.
The Cleveland School will be kicking off the school year on Wednesday, September 6th. Student drop-off/arrival time is between 8:25 am - 8:40 am. The school day officially begins at 8:40 am. We look forward to a wonderful new year!
The Cleveland will be hosting its annual Open House for the First Grade and for all of our New students on Tuesday, September 5th at 2:00 p.m.

MythMasters, of Young Audiences Arts for Learning, introduced famous stories from Greek mythology to Grades Three, Four and Five students this month. The performance, sponsored by the PTA, included masks, puppetry, mime, comedy and music. This program was supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council.
The world of math arrived at the Cleveland this week as MathsAmazing, a PTA-enrichment program, presented well-known discoveries such as The Fibonacci Sequence; How To Get Rich on Pennies A Day with Geometric Progression and Math Riddles and Paradoxes. This program was supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council.
The Mystic Paper Beasts Theater group entertained First and Second Graders last week with Native American tales. The program enabled students to learn about myths through fanciful masks, storytelling and movement. This program was supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council.
Thank you to all the volunteers who donated their time and resources to our Community Build! We now have a new playground through the support our the PTA, donors, staff and community volunteers. Go to School Events to see the slideshow.
Creators Michael Zerphy and Marv Klassen-Landis, of Children's Voices Theater, returned this year to the Cleveland to bring poetry, storytelling, mime and comedy. The performers invited students to act out original stories and poems created by children. Mrs. Frye's Second Grade class demonstrated their class story. Click on heading for more photographs.
Fifth Grade parents are invited to attend an informational meeting for all 5th grade parents on March 29th at the Coakley Middle School. A Special Education Information Session will be held at the CMS Library: 6:00 p.m. - 6:45 p.m. The All-5th-Grade Parents Session will be held in the CMS Auditorium 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
Celebrate Read Across America on Friday, March 3rd! Read Across America is a national initiative that celebrates the birthday of Dr. Seuss. There will be celebrity readers and a schoolwide Sit and Read-In! All students are encouraged to wear crazy or mixed-up socks in honor of the Dr. Seuss book "Fox In Socks"!

Every student will be enjoying Sharon Creech's "Ruby Holler" over the next several weeks as part of our annual Share A Book Read Aloud. We will be following the story of Dallas and Florida, orphan twins, who are taken in for the summer by an older couple who reside in Ruby Holler.
