Telling Stories

February 2, 2017

Acclaimed storyteller Len Cabral entertained students this week with stories and folktales from around the world. The school-wide visit was facilitated by the PTA's enrichment program. This program was supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council.

Come one and all to the Cleveland Talent Show! Enjoy amazing performances by students in Grades 3-5! You can also help the Norwood Food Pantry collection by bringing in a non-perishable item.The show is Thursday night, February 16th at 6:30.

Thanks to our PTA, our students learned about Amelia Earhart: a pioneer in aviation. Historical Performer Sheryl Faye visited the Cleveland School and dramatized, in her one-woman show, the fascinating life of famed pilot Amelia Earhart. This program was supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council.

On Friday, December 23rd, dismissal time is at 12:00 p.m. Lunch will not be served. There will be no Extended Day.

Owls, Hawks and Falcons

This week, all of our students had the opportunity to learn about and observe North American birds of prey. Jim Parks, of Wingmasters, presented the PTA-sponsored program which featured live owls, hawks and falcons. This program was supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council.

All the elementary schools and the Morrill Memorial Library kicked off its annual Norwood Young Readers Award program this week. The book program is asking all fourth- and fifth-grade students to read at least four of the twelve titles nominated for the NYRA Award. Students can participate in book clubs at both the schools and the Library. Students will vote in February. Click on the link for a complete listing of titles.

The staff spiced up their costumes with help from McCormick.

All five grades attended the lively "Positive Spin" assembly sponsored by the PTA last Thursday. Brett Outchcunis entertained students with expert yo-yo tricks and dancing as he talked about how to turn negative situations into positive ones. This program was supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council.

Learning About the Weather

October 31, 2016

Channel 7's meteorologist Bri Eggers treated second- and third-graders with a presentation about the weather. Students learned about different weather patterns including hurricanes, snow, and rain. Students also had the opportunity to discover how meteorologists make their forecasts.

McGruff the Crime Dog and representatives from the Norwood Police Department met with First Grade students in a grade-wide assembly to discuss Halloween safety rules.

We are holding a Food Drive this week to help out the Norwood Food Pantry. The Pantry is in dire need of canned goods; boxes of pasta, cereals and macaroni and cheese; as well as packaged baby foods. Since we have 347 students, our goal is to collect at least 347 items. If we reach our goal, our school will hold a Pajama Day on Friday, October 21st.

First Grade Open House 2016

The Cleveland School hosted its annual First Grade Open House last week. Parents and students had the opportunity to meet with our First Grade teachers and explore the school. Welcome First Graders!

The Cleveland School welcomed a group of 70 Kindergarten students from the Willett Early Childhood Center this week for Step Up Day. Mrs. Coppola and the First Grade team introduced the soon-to-be graduates to the First Grade classrooms and the school's facilities.

Fourth-Grade teacher Susan Barry was the recipient of a Teacher Leader Initiative Award given by Barbara Madeloni President of the Massachusetts Teachers Association. The Award acknowledges Mrs. Barry's completion of the Teacher Leader Initiative designed to promote leadership in the teaching profession and advance student learning. As part of the program, Mrs. Barry focused her attention on increasing technology use in the classroom through collaborative training.

The Morrill Memorial Library recently announced the winners of its Fifth Annual Essay Contest. The theme, this year, was "The Bravest Character I Know". Fifth Grade student Cameron Badger earned Third Place for his essay on Augie from "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio. Honorable Mention was awarded to fourth-grade student Nevan Sujit. Other essay winners included former Cleveland students Mary Erickson (First Place) and Meenu Ravi (Second Place).

On May 6th, the Orient Lodge of Masons hosted its annual Norwood Teacher of the Year awards. The Cleveland School congratulates the nomination of five of its staff members: Kristine Atiyeh; Amanda Baker; Beverly Haffey; Nancy Landfield; and Janet Lynch. We extend our congratulations to Norwood Teacher of the Year winner Laura Tolman from the Willet Early childhood Center!

For the past several months, the Gym during Second Lunch recess has been the go-to venue for seven Fifth Grade basketball teams. Players from the two championship teams, the Pink Narwhals and the Spitfires, were reorganized to participate in the March Madness Final. Please check our slideshow under School Events.

Poetry In Motion

April 8, 2016

Actor, director, playwright, mime and teacher Dave Zucker visited the Cleveland School armed with poetry and music. The "Poetry in Motion" performer entertained students with an array of poems. Tucker urged students to find the poetry inside themselves and all around their world.

As part of the Cleveland School's Share-A-Book program featuring "Because of Winn Dixie", the PTA sponsored a visit by an MSPCA representative to talk to students about Animal Care, Shelters and Pet Adoption. Students also participated in a month-long Animal Shelter Wish List program and donated items for the Noble Family Animal Care and Adoption Center and the Nevins Farm and Equine Center. The Wish List drive was spear headed by the Student Council.
