Hello Mustang families,
We enter an unseasonably warm February with a busy schedule for this week and immediately following vacation. Your students’ quarter 2 and mid-term grades have been published – there was an update yesterday afternoon as we needed to re-publish the grades for calculating honor roll, if you notice a change in grades.
Please read this newsletter closely as there are many deadlines, important dates, and recognitions deserving of your attention.
Information Night Reminder
February 4th, the Norwood High School Guidance staff is hosting Junior College Planning Night at 6:30pm in the auditorium. This presentation will include an overview of the college exploration and application process by members of the Guidance staff. In addition, you will hear from 3 college admissions representatives from Stonehill, UMass Amherst, and Mass Bay Community College. Again, the presentation is this Thursday, February 4th at 6:30pm in the auditorium. All juniors and their parents/guardians are invited to attend. Hope to see you there!
Athletics
The Norwood Mustang Athletic department is proud to be sending two student athletes and one coach to participate in Girls and Women in Sport Day at Faneuil Hall on Friday, February 5th.
The varsity sports winter awards night will be held on Tuesday 3/1, starting with a reception in the dining hall at 6:15pm, followed by the awards at 6:30pm in the auditorium.
Spring Sports Information and Registration - Spring sports information night for students and parents on Tuesday 3/8 at 7pm in the auditorium. Spring sports registration will be due on or before Friday 3/11. Spring sports begin on Monday 3/21.
World Languages
The application for the Foreign Language National Honor Societies is due on Feb. 5. The application and the requirements are available on the Foreign Language Department homepage on the NHS website.
This year's 12th annual Celebration of Languages and Cultures is March 10 from 6-8pm in the NHS Dining Hall.
The Global Citizenship Club is hosting a fundraiser on Feb 9 from 12pm-9pm at Monster Mini Golf. While we would love for you to come and share the day with us, tickets purchased for the event will be honored by Monster Mini Golf throughout the year.Can't join us? The tickets make great gifts for birthdays, Valentine's Day, etc!
Fine and Performing Arts – Awards and Recognitions
Boston Globe Scholastic Winners
The Visual Arts Department is pleased to announce that our Boston Globe Scholastic winners, a statewide Art competition. 16 pieces of artwork received honors. In particular, there are 2 Gold Keys, 6 Silver Keys, and 8 Honorable Mentions. All Gold Key winners then compete on the national level and there are artwork will on display at the EF (Education First), Two Education Circle, Cambridge, MA 02141 (near the Science Museum), from March 5–March 20, 2016.The Art Department is very proud of our winners as well as all of the student whose work we entered. STN Broadcast Excellence Awards
Students from the NHS-TV program were recently honored with two national awards by the Student Television Network. The STN Broadcast Excellence Awards recognize the top student-produced news programs in the nation, broken down into the categories of daily live show, weekly show and monthly show. There is only one winner from each of the seven regions in the country. Norwood High School is the only school in the nation to win in more than one category for this contest. NHS-Update will represent the Northeast Region in the daily live category. Mustang Magazine will represent the Northeast Region in the monthly category. Regional winners compete against each other for the overall national crown, announced at the national convention in Atlanta, GA this March. NHS-TV is attending the national convention with 26 students and 4 chaperones.
AP Exam Information
Looking ahead! Deposits for advanced placement (AP) tests will be due in early March. A notice will be given to students next week. College Board increased the exam price this year to $92 per exam. A deposit of $20 will be due for each test your student is taking. Any student interested in a reduced fee waiver should see Mrs. Shore in Rm 229 by next Friday February 12th, or contact her at jshore@norwood.k12.ma.us
