English Language Arts

Students read and write everyday!  Both Reader’s Workshop and Writer’s Workshop are designed to support readers and writers of all ages and skill levels. The workshops include 3 major components, but there may be variation on how the workshops are implemented depending upon a teacher’s styles and the students’ needs.

Reader’s Workshop

Focus Lesson:

During the Focus Lesson, the teacher introduces a strategy by featuring a particular text. The teacher often will model the focus strategy while reading for the students.

Independent Reading:

During Independent Reading, students read from their personal book bins those books that have been determined are “just right” for their personal reading levels.

During Independent Reading, the teacher will conference 1-1 with students and/ or lead Guided Reading groups focusing on a particular strategy (either for review or for enrichment) with a small group of students.

Group Share:

During Group Share, students are invited to share with the class a particular example of how they may have used a focus strategy.

Writer’s Workshop

Focus Lesson:

During the Focus Lesson, the teacher introduces a strategy by showing how an author uses that strategy in a particular text or writing sample. Then the teacher often will model that focus strategy while writing for the students.

Independent Writing:

During Independent Writing, students write independently. Student writing will focus on various genres throughout the year.

During Independent Writing, the teacher will conference 1-1 with students and/ or lead Guided Writing groups focusing on a particular strategy (either for review or for enrichment) with a small group of students.

Group Share:

During Group Share, students are invited to share their writing with the class.
