How to Pick a Just Right Book
There are several ways to go about picking a book that is Just Right. The Five-Finger Rule helps readers check out how difficult the words might be.
Five-Finger Rule
Make a fist with your hand. Pick a page from the book and read the words. Put up one finger for every word you cannot read OR do not know the meaning.
If you have…
- 0 or 1 fingers the book is...Easy.
- 2 or 3 fingers the book is...Just Right.
- 4 or 5 fingers the book is...Challenging.
Remember . . . If readers spend all their energy and time struggling over words, reading becomes a task. They need to be reading Just Right Books!
