Why We Read Aloud?

We are asking our Willett School families to incorporate read alouds as part of their daily routine. Take the time to read aloud with your family. No child is too old to be read to. Read aloud for twenty minutes. If you prefer, you could also listen together to an audio version of a book.

Reading aloud is one of the most beneficial activities we can do with our children. Read aloud from a newspaper or magazine. You could also read poetry, song lyrics...all types of text.

If time is an issue, try reading aloud a couple of times during the week.

A Read Aloud:

  • Explains the world to children
  • Expands the imagination
  • Raises curiosity
  • Helps children understand story elements
  • Increases listening comprehension
  • Strengthens vocabulary
  • Models fluency
  • Demonstrates importance of reading
  • Increases stamina for paying attention
  • Improves memory skills
  • Creates a sense of community
  • Provides a timeout from other types of media (tv, video games, etc.)
