What Is Balanced Literacy?

  • Balanced Literacy is an instructional model for teaching both Reading and Writing.
  • Balanced Literacy enables teachers to meet the individual needs of their students by differentiating instruction.
  • Balanced Literacy in the Town of Norwood provides literacy instruction through the Workshop model. Both Readers and Writers Workshops employ whole group(class), small group, and individual instruction.
  • Balanced Literacy ensures that texts are read to, with and by students.
  • Balanced Literacy teaches students to become aware of their thinking as they read and write.
  • Balanced Literacy enables students to become strategic in both their reading and writing.
  • Readers Workshop gives students time to practice their reading in books they have self-selected to read.

The Goals:

  • Independent Readers and Writers
  • Readers who understand what they read
  • Readers can use strategies to help them observe, notice, clarify, create, remember and understand.
  • Readers and Writers who are engaged.
