About the School
Mission
The mission of the Dr. Philip O. Coakley Middle School is to develop global citizens who appreciate learning. In partnership with the Norwood community, we foster social, emotional, and intellectual growth in a safe, inclusive, and academically rigorous environment. We are committed to the core values of respect and responsiblity.
Middle School Philosophy
Middle school children are recognized as being unique in that they are going through physical and psychological changes, while at the same time formulating individuality and establishing values. Learning experiences are influenced greatly by the attitudes and ideas expressed by teachers, parents, peers, and media. It is the middle school's responsibility to combine these aspects into an atmosphere that will be positive and focused on student growth and development.
The middle school incorporates programs that meet the needs and explore the potential of each student. It provides teachers and teaching styles that are compatible with intellectual, aesthetic, social, physical, and emotional growth. We use the practice known as teaming at this level. Each student belongs to a group of 80 to 100 students, who share the same set of teachers for mathematics, science, social studies and English Language Arts. Teaming provides a small school experience within a large school environment. It allows teachers to build strong relationships with students and ensure each students receives the individualized attention they deserve. The teaming model allows CMS to enhance our collaborative learning practices, and differentiation strategies and to use common planning time to assess student needs and identify instructional strategies to support struggling students. It also allows teachers to continue their own learning and growth which enables them to better serve their students.
Middle school helps children develop a positive attitude toward learning, to develop their passions and journey towards potential futures , and to fulfill his or her responsibilities in a democratic society. The educational philosophy of Coakley Middle School is based on the premise that students and teachers are constantly learning, developing purpose, acquiring essential skills, and discovering their intrinsic motivation in order to help our students look towards their future with optimism. This is the basis for developing goals, objectives, and programs for the school.
