Freshman Seminars
Guidance counselors will be meeting with freshmen in a classroom setting to cover various grade-level topics throughout the year. Below are the intended seminar topics by term. There will be a small assessment at the end of each seminar to test for understanding.
TERM 1: SELF-ADVOCACY SKILLS
Guidance counselors will explain the appropriate and effective ways to get in touch with teachers and their dean, guidance counselor, and other support staff. They will also provide students with a schedule of teacher extra help days and sample emails to teachers. Additionally, counselors provide an overview of grading procedures and Grade Point Average (GPA).
TERM 2: GOAL-SETTING
Students will use their Term 1 grades to set new goals going into Term 2. Counselors will cover the grading scale and explain the Mid-Year Exam schedule and format.
TERM 3: COURSE SELECTION & ACADEMIC PLANNING
Students will receive information regarding the course selection process and will be assisted in developing their academic plan for the year(s) ahead. This includes college planning and career pathways.
TERM 4: PREPARING FOR SOPHOMORE YEAR
With the help of upperclassmen, counselors will provide freshmen with an idea of what to expect as they finish freshmen year and begin preparing for sophomore year.
