Are You a Citizen if You Can't Vote?

The Fifteenth Amendment guaranteed United States citizens the right to vote, but the amendment did not
mention women. Many people thought women should not or did not need to vote in elections. Meet historic
Susan B. Anthony, who said that if women paid taxes, they should be able to vote. See what happened to
Anthony, who was arrested and prosecuted just for registering to vote. This superb site lets you see photo-
graphs, hear audio, and view documents relating to the women's suffrage movement.

American Women Through Time 1910-1919   Garment workers went on strike in Chicago in 1910, the same
year that Madam Walker established a beauty school and factory in Indianapolis. The Triangle Factory Fire oc-
curred in 1911, and the Bread and Roses Strike started in 1912. Juliette Low started the Girl Scouts in 1912, the
same year the Children's Bureau was created. Mother Jones led protests against conditions in the mines in 1913,
the same year that 5,000 women marched for suffrage in Washington D.C. This timeline explores other important
events from U.S. history in the 1910s.
