"Bath Salts" Frequently Asked Questions

An Alarming New Stimulant, Legal in Many States   Emergency room doctors were dismayed to get patients who were so agitated and psychotic that they had to be restrained by a whole team and admitted to the psychiatric unit, or who had to be given general anesthesia because they wouldn't respond to powerful sedatives. These patients had taken recreational drugs known as bath salts, like mephedrone and MDPV. In 2010, poison control centers received about 300 calls about these drugs. In the first six months of 2011, they received more than 3,000 calls about bath salts.

Florida Bans Cocaine-Like Bath Salts Sold In Stores   A gift shop owner in Florida was angry when the sale of bath salts was banned in the state and his supply of the previously legal product, which was several thousand dollars worth, had to be pulled from the shelves. He is planning to file a lawsuit challenging the attorney general's ban. He thinks accounts about the effects of the drug are exaggerated and that it's no more dangerous than alcohol. Emergency room doctors, poison control officials, and law enforcement officers disagree. They've encountered people using the drug who are psychotic, paranoid, combative, and having hallucinations.

Bath Salts Drug Trend: Expert Q and A     Sold as bath salts or plant food, designer drugs like mephedrone and MDPV are synthetic stimulants made instreet labs. Marketing them as bath salts and claiming they weren't intended for human consumption allowed them to be legally sold, but the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration evoked an emergency action to make their sale illegal. These drugs cause paranoia, agitation, hallucinations, chest pain, and high blood pressure. In addition to acute toxicity, there is also concern about addictions and suicides linked to the drugs.
