Myers & Briggs Site Map
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality inventory has translated the theory of psychological types described by C. G. Jung into a tool that is both understandable and useful in people's lives. As the Myer & Briggs Foundation web site explains, the essence of the theory is that a great deal of the apparently random variation in behavior is actually both consistent and orderly since that variation stems from basic differences in the ways people prefer to use their judgment and perception. This material here explains personality development, Jung's theoretical framework, and the many uses of the MBTI tool.

Extraversion or Introversion
The first personality pair in the Myers Briggs personality inventory is extraversion or introversion. Extraverts get their energy from being active with other people, having a wide group of friends, and talking to others. Introverts spend more of their time in the inner world of their mind, thinking through ideas, and interacting with a few close friends. The downside of being an extrovert is jumping into projects or activities without thinking it through. The downside of being an introvert is reflecting too much and not verifying thoughts in the outside world.

Transpersonal Pioneers: Carl Jung
Culled from the sixth edition of Personality and Personal Growth by R. Frager and J. Fadiman, this entry discusses Carl Jung and his theory of personality development. According to Frager and Fadiman, Jungian psychology hinges on a connection between the ego and self, a critical dialogue between the conscious and unconscious processes. The material in this long excerpt includes such topics as introversion and extraversion, psychological functions (thinking, feeling, sensation, and intuition), the unconscious, archetype, ego, persona, shadow, self, symbols, and more.

Understanding the MBTI and Personality Types
"ENTJ, INFP, ISTJ, ENFJ and so on. Many know these are the short-hand designations for the 16 Personality Types popularized by Isabel Myers and her successors fascinated by the theory of personality originally postulated by psychologist Carl Jung. But less well known is that there is an order and organization to these letters code."

16 Fiction Book Characters' Myers-Briggs Personality Types
"Interestingly, many protagonists and authors are INFPs due to the type's creative, introspective nature, so don't take offense if you're matched up with a villain or a sidekick."
