Signs of Hope for Environmental Issues in the Niger River Delta
With the discovery of oil in the Niger River Delta and the lack of the government enforcing its own environmental laws, oil dumping has wreaked havoc on the ecosystem there. Multinational corporations spill approximately 260,000 barrels of oil every year into rivers and fresh water sou. There have been approximately 2,400 oil spills between 2006-2010, which can destroy local communities who depend on clean water. The lack of government action can lead to militant groups using unlawful measures to pressure the Nigerian government to take action.

Consumption and Consumerism
Around the world, 20% of the world’s population in the highest-income countries account for 86% of the total private consumption spending. The poorest 20% spends only 1.3% of total private consumption, demonstrating wide inequalities in consumption. Another consequence to out of control growth in consumption is that it puts strains on the environment. A chart shows a breakdown of spending priorities might surprise you when you see that more money is on pet foods in Europe and the U.S. than basic education and clean water for all developing countries.
