Surrealist Muse: Lee Miller, Roland Penrose, and Man Ray The photography of Lee Miller has been an
inspiration for many other artists and photographers. Her artistic creativity made photographs into portraits
and Surrealist images. This fiercely independent woman had a great interest in art and culture. While study-
ing in Paris, she learned the craft of photography and was introduced to Surrealism. Her photography encom-
passed documentary, perceptual, and experimental art. She became one of the only female photographers
to be allowed to document combat and war zones. The images from the concentration camps left their impact
for the rest of her life.

Surrealism in New York City
Shocking and sometimes violent, surrealistic images free the unconscious mind. Dali's melting clocks are
one of the best-known examples of this art movement. Other examples include constellations made of body
parts or modern figures that are part human and part animal. The movement avoided a rigid definition, leading
to surreal being used to describe anything disturbing or incongruent. Dream sequences in movies often reflect
surrealism, and surrealism found its way into fashion and everyday life.

Salvador Dali: 1904-1989 Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali i Domenech was born in 1904 into a prosperous family
in Figueres, Spain. He lived with his wife in nearby Port Lligat until his escape from Europe during World War II,
during which time he spent 1940-48 living in the U.S. Dali was a leader in the Surrealist Movement, but moved into
his classic period in the 1940's demonstrating his move to a preoccupation with science and religion. This brief bio-graphy sketch on thisweb site is accompanied by a photograph of Dali.
