Hunger
Feeding America: Hunger and Poverty Statistics
The 2015 Status Report on Hunger in Massachusetts
Food Insecurity Among Children in Massachusetts
"Nationwide, households with children experience higher rates of food insecurity than the national average for all households, rising as high as 22% (more than 1 in 5) for households with children under 6. Also at increased risk are households headed by a single parent (36.8% for women and 24.9% for men), and Hispanic and black families (26.2% and 25.1%, respectively). 5 Of food-insecure families with children, 85% have a working adult in the home and 70% have a full-time worker, underlining the strain that low wages can put on a family’s ability to adequately
feed all family members. 6"

Animal Abuse
Explore All the Issues: Help Animals, One Issue at a Time
From animals used in the fur trade to rescuing animals being abused, the Humane Society addresses many different areas involving animal cruelty. On factory fur farms, animals are electrocuted or even skinned alive. Baby seals are clubbed for their fur, and foxes are attacked by dogs for sport in enclosed pens. Using hounds to hunt bears or cougars can result in death and injury for the dogs and wild animals. Constantly chained dogs lead solitary lives, even though they are social animals. They become bored, anxious, and aggressive. The Humane Society fights puppy mills and rescues animals after disasters.

Volunteer Opportunities
Norwood Ecumenical Food Pantry
The pantry opened in 1989 providing food to six clients. We have a completely volunteer staff, giving many hours of their time each week to purchasing food,
stocking shelves, sorting goods by expiration dates, cleaning, repairing, and handling administrative duties. Currently, we have over 100 volunteers involved in one or more of these activities. Federal/USDA data, values food at $1.66 per pound. Fortunately we receive many donations of food rather than having to purchase all of the food we need.
