South America, 1800–1900 A.D.: Overview
In the first quarter of the 19th century, Spanish territories in South America gained their independence. In the fall of colonial rule, caudilos took power in Argentina, Paraguay, and Ecuador. These military dictators begin to form new societies. Juan Manuel de Rosas took power in Argentina. Francisco Solano Lopez took power in Paraguay. Juan Jose Flores took control in Ecuador. Brazil gained its freedom from Portugal in 1822.Nationalism flourished in the arts, but industrial development increased class divisions. A timeline explores the roles of Simon Bolivar, Dom Pedro, and Juan Manual de Rosas.
