Why Is the Funeral Ritual Important?

Weddings and birthday parties are joyful celebrations but funeral rituals play an important role in life as well. Funerals allow mourners to embrace their beliefs about death and acknowledge the reality that the person has died. The finality of death is witnessed as funeral arrangements are made and the casket is lowered into the ground. The funeral offers are rare culturally accepted opportunity to mourn publicly. Explore the shift to the establishment of a new self-identity as the bereaved is no longer a spouse, parent, son, or brother to the deceased.
